You basically start your day by saying hi to the elderly. They sure
love to see you and to be able to talk with you. They get
pretty lonely, so seeing a friendly face will make their day. I always
make sure I do it before I start my day cleaning away and giving them
their medicine. Now there are some old grumpy people that live
here. One man glares and he doesn't talk much but his name is George and
he usually sits over there by the fireplace. Giving him a wave will
do. Always ask questions because it's important that everyone
is getting what they want and that they are taking care of. Be aware of
Chrystal, she can be grouchy and will try to blame you for
everything. Just stay positive and tell the truth. Over here is the
kitchen and this is where you put the dirty dishes. Make sure you don't
stack the plates too high. After about 10 plates that are
stacked try and make a new stack. When giving the elderly their food makes
sure they have their bibs on. Mary is our cook and she is super sweet,
just letting you know that she makes delicious food.
When cleaning make sure you wear gloves. The gloves are in each room and
they are right by the sinks. You'll need to make the beds, dust the t.v.
and shelves. Then clean the bathroom. After cleaning always wash your
hands for about 10 seconds. On each door there will be information about the
patient so you will know what is wrong with them or if they have any
conditions. The elderly are fragile so you'll need to handle them
carefully. You'll fall in love with them. Eunice is a talker and she will
just talk, talk and talk, she will make you smile. Some of the nurses here
though can be inpatient so don't be offended. Cleaning the patients can be
tiring. The cleaning supplies are in their closets. If you have to go to
the bathroom it's just down the hall to the left by the elevator.
Each patient has their own amount of medicine that they take. There is a
note under the table cart for you to look at. Patty and Welma are the only
ones that take four different types of pills. After giving them the
medicine the table cart will go back in this closet here. The door will be
locked so go to the front desk for the key. We want to also make sure
there blood pressure is good. There will be a sheet of paper with you that
looks like this. You fill the paper out and then give it to the nurse.
This place is fun because we celebrate each holiday. We all get pretty
decorative and we work with the elderly to handle supplies. The elderly
gets excited to participate. We have bingo every Friday night. We take
them for a ride on the bus to the library every Monday and Wednesday. That is
pretty much it and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask Betsey
or me. Betsey is the head Nurse so please do not be afraid to ask.
