A&P

“John Updikes “ A & P” Using Feminist Criticism Strategies”
The thought of wearing nothing but bathing suits in a store can bring attention. How do you react when seeing someone with only a swimsuit on at a store? Sammy who works at the store saw three pretty girls who walked in with just swimsuits on. One girl was leading the group and her name was Queenie. Sammy thought that they were pretty and classy and that they were probably in the upper class.  A & P was written in 1961 so just think that things were way different back then. Upper class acted differently than lower class. Women tried to be elegant and wanted to be treated nicely. In 1961 women dressed differently and were mainly housewives. Men were more in control and would be more demanding.  Women now in days can wear what they like.  In A & P Queenie was the one that had her straps down. They were off her shoulders looped loose.
The girls were feminine and had clean skin. Queenie had good posture and she looked like she didn’t want to talk to anyone. The manager who is a guy comes up to them and says, “ This isn’t the beach.” He says that they need to come into this store with their shoulders covered. It seemed like they were not being ladies and they were not dressed like women. Men back then were in charge and the manager had the control and wanted to make sure he mentioned the rules to the girls. He talked to them in a demand way because they were girls instead of men. This was criticism to the girls. Sammy sees Queenie blushed and her voice changed. She mentioned that she was in the store to find one thing. She then said that they are decent. Kind of disagreeing with the manager. At this point she is talking back to the manager. After the girls left Sammy ends up realizing that the girls did nothing wrong and they were just customers. He ends up quitting and he wants to find the girls. There was criticism by judgment, looks, and gender. Men talked differently to women and it has changed now.  It seemed around this time that they wanted to be able to have equal rights and could dress however they wanted. Women should be treated the same and should be respected the same way as men. It seemed that the three girls were not afraid of what they looked like. Once the manager saw what they looked like he made sure he was right there and told them the rules. I am glad that things have changed throughout the years.

Today was such a beautiful day! I sat in my chair, I looked out of my window and saw such a beautiful sun rise. It sure made me feel blessed.

I saw a cute deer outside my house the other day and it hung around for about a half an hour.

Just sitting down making a new shirt for Brently before he comes home from work.

Wondering what to make for dinner! Any suggestions?

Tomorrow my parents are coming to visit, I can't wait to hug them both!

My parents are doing great and they are heading back home tomorrow. Going to miss them both dearly.

Orientation

You basically start your day by saying hi to the elderly. They sure love to see you and to be able to talk with you. They get pretty lonely, so seeing a friendly face will make their day. I always make sure I do it before I start my day cleaning away and giving them their medicine. Now there are some old grumpy people that live here. One man glares and he doesn't talk much but his name is George and he usually sits over there by the fireplace. Giving him a wave will do. Always ask questions because it's important that everyone is getting what they want and that they are taking care of. Be aware of Chrystal, she can be grouchy and will try to blame you for everything. Just stay positive and tell the truth. Over here is the kitchen and this is where you put the dirty dishes. Make sure you don't stack the plates too high. After about 10 plates that are stacked try and make a new stack. When giving the elderly their food makes sure they have their bibs on. Mary is our cook and she is super sweet, just letting you know that she makes delicious food.
When cleaning make sure you wear gloves. The gloves are in each room and they are right by the sinks. You'll need to make the beds, dust the t.v. and shelves. Then clean the bathroom. After cleaning always wash your hands for about 10 seconds. On each door there will be information about the patient so you will know what is wrong with them or if they have any conditions. The elderly are fragile so you'll need to handle them carefully. You'll fall in love with them. Eunice is a talker and she will just talk, talk and talk, she will make you smile. Some of the nurses here though can be inpatient so don't be offended. Cleaning the patients can be tiring. The cleaning supplies are in their closets. If you have to go to the bathroom it's just down the hall to the left by the elevator.
Each patient has their own amount of medicine that they take. There is a note under the table cart for you to look at. Patty and Welma are the only ones that take four different types of pills. After giving them the medicine the table cart will go back in this closet here. The door will be locked so go to the front desk for the key. We want to also make sure there blood pressure is good. There will be a sheet of paper with you that looks like this. You fill the paper out and then give it to the nurse.
This place is fun because we celebrate each holiday. We all get pretty decorative and we work with the elderly to handle supplies. The elderly gets excited to participate. We have bingo every Friday night. We take them for a ride on the bus to the library every Monday and Wednesday. That is pretty much it and if you have any more questions please feel free to ask Betsey or me. Betsey is the head Nurse so please do not be afraid to ask.
